In terms of growing volume of salmon, there is much hype about full life cycle land based aquaculture, but there is also some deep sea fully enclosed floating pens being developed, which could potentially be cheaper and more environmentally friendlier than land based systems.
Salmon is harvested in opposite times of the year in the southern hemisphere, so Australias peak competition on a global market is with Chile, but we are a long way behind them on volume, deep sea pens would be a game changer, but high capital costs, and any technological advances will increase competition and push down prices for everyone.
