Council Backs Vista With Support Letter
Tyler Waugh • Thu, Dec 06, 2012
One week after agreeing to withdraw a letter of concern about Coalspur’s Vista Coal Project (VCP), Town council upped the ante by voting Dec. 4 to pen a letter of support.
The move reflects what council and administration believe is “significant progress” with Coalspur on addressing more than 20 points of concern the Town had with the VCP.
The move also comes after a Nov. 29 letter from Coalspur CEO Gill Winckler requesting that the Town consider a letter of support.
“If you agree that Vista Coal Project represents an overall benefit to the region, and that the Town and Coalspur’s positive community relationship is something that should be made public, your written statement of support will help demonstrate that key stakeholders have been effectively engaged and are in favour of the project,” read the letter.
Coun. Lorraine Johnston-MacKay made the motion to submit a letter of support for the project, which was backed by Coun. Ryan Maguhn.
“I want to see us give it full support, decisively,” said Maguhn. “(Coalspur) has shown they are dedicated to work through this process.”
He said the move would be important to further a project that would strengthen the local economy and allay concerns by some residents about the stagnant growth in Town.
Kimberley Worthington, housing and economic development manager for the Town of Hinton, said the Town would still have the ability to take any unresolved issues to the Energy Resource Conservation Board (ERCB).
“We still have regulatory bodies in our back pocket,” she said.
Coun. Jane Macridis made a motion to defer the letter of support until the regular meeting of Feb. 5, 2013, saying that it would give the Town and Coalspur another couple months to continue to work toward resolution of the outstanding concerns. She made the motion after checking with Coalspur representatives to ensure the delay wouldn’t hold back progress.
However, she was the only one in favour of deferring the letter of support and council approved Johnston-MacKay’s motion.
