why ?

If Julia Gillard has socialist/communist ideals why did she suck up to the head nation of the capitalist world the USA.
The proper thing to do would have been give an nice speech attend the formalities and come home.
In her speech she stated that as a young girl she was in awe of what the USA could achieve. If that was the case why did she become a socialist/communist ?
