Give More Support To Communities - Otumfuo Urges Anglogold
Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, has asked the management of AngloGold Ashanti (AGA) to establish good relations with communities in its surrounding areas to help forestall the rising incidence of illegal mining(galamsey), especially at the Obuasi Mines.
He said there existed good community relations between the former Ashanti Goldfields Company (AGC) before the merger with AngloGold in 2004, leading to limited illegal mining operations by the communities.
The Asantehene said, for instance, that he was aware that after the merger, AGA refused to relate well with the surrounding communities and cut the budget for community social responsibilities, with the excuse that the company had been paying taxes to the government.
