Four straight days of temperatures below minus-5 degrees in Canberra

    25 June 2018 — 8:34am

For the first time in at least 10 years, Canberra has shivered through four consecutive June mornings below minus-5 degrees.
The mercury plummeted to minus-5.2 degrees at 5.30am on Monday and as if that wasn't cold enough, the temperature felt like minus-8.7 degrees.

Weatherzone meteorologist Tom Hough said the organisation's data for Canberra Airport went back to 2008, and showed no other occasions during June where the temperature dropped below minus-5 degrees on four straight days.
Mr Hough said there was some respite on the way, with clouds and showers forecast in the next few days set to warm things up.
A low of minus-3 was expected on Tuesday, and minus-1 on Wednesday. It was then set to go back to the other side of 0 on Thursday, with a forecast minimum of 3 degrees.

"We've got a broad high-pressure system centred over the South Australia/Victoria border, and that's bringing largely clear skies," Mr Hough said.
"Combined with light winds, that's what's creating these low temperatures.
"We've got some clouds and showers increasing in the next couple of days though, so this should be the last morning below minus-5."
Mr Hough said light winds would stick around for the next week or so, while no significant rainfall was expected.
"There might be only the odd spattering later in the week," he said.

"You'd only be looking at less than five millimetres on Thursday and Friday."
The ski fields should see fresh snowfall each day from Wednesday until the end of the week.
Perisher and Thredbo expect their biggest falls of the week to come on Friday and Sunday, when between two and five centimetres of fresh snow is predicted.
The next significant snowfall is expected on Saturday, July 7, with between five and 10 centimetres expected to fall at Perisher.
