When the cost of the metal exceeds the face value of the coin, that's when those coins are removed from circulation.
For example, if the 5 cent coin is made up of 7 cents worth of metal, the coin is discontinued. That's what happened with the 1 & 2 cent coins & it will happen to the 20 & 50 cent coins on day.
What's the cause? Too much money printing by central banks & government spending. Plus, we're moving towards a cashless society.
