A market being set up for speculating on Futures contracts separating the Li types into Li carbonate CIF Asia, Li hydroxide CIF Asia, Li spogamine concentrate FOB Australia this is serious news.
This is precisely what the market has been lacking. China and the (clueless, lazy or up to something?) analysts following their lead, conflate it all into the carbonate category, and go along with a false impression of a glut in supply which was a nice cover for distressed acquisitions at low prices. IMO.
For a look at this false pricing, check out Mr Lithium on Money of Mine Youtube channel from last year. He is explicit in what's missing from the Li market; it's immature (his words) and therefore easily manipulated (mine). He mentions the lack of futures but also the lack of separation into types of Li which is a chemical compound and not a commodity as such.
This years interview with MoM was disappointing as he seems to now be under contract with someone (possibly the Chinese?), and isn't quite as forthcoming.
But his take on things is well worth a listening, despite the tedious bravado and back scratching going on from the MoM team. People who are half tanked always think they're funnier and more witty than they actually are.
