Interesting article but the most telling comment was "A recent summary of various flow battery companies was dismal reading, as they all seem to be struggling with the relentless progress of lithium batteries. A key statistic is that the volume-weighted price of a lithium ion battery pack fell 85% between 2010 and 2018."
Yes flow batteries have some advantages over lithium, but everything has a dollar value and while flow battery technology is waiting for prime time, its main competitor, lithium-ion, is already racing ahead on scale and cost-competitiveness thanks to the growth of the electric vehicle industry.
Redflow needs to get moving soon or be left behind (the Beta versus VHS comparison). Selling odd batteries here and there is not going to cut it. What would give it a real boost would be if someone like AGL or Energy Australia took a 20% stake in Redflow and agreed to use zinc bromine flow batteries in two or three large battery projects it had planned. Wishful thinking but might be the only hope for getting scale and credibility before the lithium cost advantage becomes too much.
