"Of more direct concern for the ABC is possible funding cuts, which may affect its news gathering capabilities, and the future of its Australia Network, the satellite television broadcasting network that beams into more than 40 countries in the Asia Pacific region. The Abbott government, contrary to the Coalition's pre-election promise that it would not cut funding for the ABC, appears to be preparing to scrap the taxpayer-funded Australia Network service. The big question is why. Is the service a financial deadweight? Is it no longer needed? Or is it, like the rest of the ABC apparently, editorially out of line with the Abbott government's ideology? First, a little history."
