Btw, retired Pompeo visited Taiwan a few months ago. Did you see or hear any press coverage. Did the President of Taiwan go to the airport to greet him, like she did a few years ago, when he was the Secretary of State?

If you think that was an over-reaction, see what happens if we send our Deputy PM to one of the US Colonies where the majority inhabitants want to kick the US out. See how the US Gov would respond if our Deputy PM made an uninvited visit to talk to those people.
Lastly, most politician are old. Some are wiser with age. But some are just foolish and drunk. Joe and Nancy are in the later category. They needed a political win, from the negative press coverage of the Russia/Ukraine war.
Raising the yellow peril narrative gave them that.
