you can produce Lithium Carbonate from Spodumene but i suppose this is only viable if Carbonate is trading in a certain price range. If you take into account that all major Lithium Chloride brine reserves are located in South america or China it can be worth to establish some sources of Carbonate in a stable region like Australia, speially from a Japanese point of view. China will most likely ban Lithium exports or will demand high export tariffs and Southamerica may face the problem of stronger resistance against exploiting such resources who destroy major eco-systems in the countries.
If you look at the price outlook which is mainly based on a stronger Li-Ion Battery demand you will see where the Lithium prices may be up to. I think a company like Marubeni will be able to develop a way to reduce production costs of LiCO3 from LiAlSi2O6.
