I'd say you are very right around this part though - "Perhaps the reason for pursuing it was so that those who were wronged felt that somebody actually had their back"

Its called appealing to ones vanity! They were saying all of the right things at the time to make us feel more comfortable & acceptable to their way of thinking.

I was left feeling confident that they would retrieve the monies taken.

When all of this was happening I din't see any disclaimers while they were making these promises advising if the oil price went down to bla bla bla then the picture will not be as complete bla bla bla. They are big boys who based their assumptions on oil staying over $100 per barrel so very naive or just plain stupid is anyone's guess! Again, I would prefer to have someone in the top job that will provide me with all of the info based on certain scenarios...they did not do that...they just said we will do this & this & this so at face value you must judge them for their achievements which right now amount to very little!
