    there’s one other thing I’ve reflected on recently

    in many ways I am far more left wing than right - I believe in social justice and that not everyone can make a go of things. I believe that the gap between rich and poor is as much a structural problem as anything else.

    but as I always knew my values are deeply conservative. There are many things about the current liberalism and views that encourage individual rights over community obligation that are deeply damaging to society.

    tolerance and causes do not create a society that is any more healthy than belief that one must sometimes sacrifice self for others. Any look at societies which are regarded as happier will support that proposition

    so now I find myself weirdly more aligned with those who I might once have regarded as old fashioned. I still believe in tolerance. Decency Kindness. But I also believe that we should follow the law whether we approve or not, commit to community health, sacrifice self for grater good and sometimes like it or lump it
