There is a reason why every single state premier is in a race to the bottom in terms of more and more draconian restrictions and lockdowns. They've scared much of their populations silly, to the point where they are then able to claim that they have 'rescued' everyone from COVID by shutting borders and locking down entire states (even when there are zero cases of the virus - e.g. South Australia).
Right now the politically popular thing to do is to scare your population and then implement harsh measures.
The least popular thing (politically) to do right now is to be sensible, balance the risks of COVID with the many other risks (lack of cancer screenings, mental health deterioration, suicides, family break downs, businesses destroyed, childrens education ruined).
