It wasn't a 'few hundred millions' from the previous Federal government in Australia - it was (in total) A$2.7 billion in various taxpayer subsidies.
On top of that were contributions from stupid, freespending mostly Labor state governments, such as various payments to see international flights to destination X resume or commence, plus in NSW and probably Victoria's case funding to urge QAN to locate its head office in the state's capital city. Alan Joyce 'played' these state governments well: QAN ended up staying in Mascot, Sydney, but collected 'coin' along the way. A tribute to how state governments and their elitist, hopeless public servants waste taxpayers' funds.
