With so-called sale fares, we plebs lack access to how many seats are offered on each flight, but the QAN international sale this morning suggests that bookings are fairly lacklustre on some international routes.
August and mid October to mid November are not peak leisure travel periods to Asia, but $789 return Melbourne to Jakarta (not a touristy destination) and $799 return to Manila (a touristy destination given it gives access to 7,000+ other Filipino islands) suggests QAN needs to fill quite a few seats. These destinations typically involve a domestic flight to and from Sydney as QAN doesn't fly to either nonstop from Melbourne, as it's Sydney-centric.
Similarly $1659 return (economy class) from Melbourne to Los Angeles shows the adverse effect more United Airlines seats each day from Australia to the USA must be having on QAN.
