I agree with you, on the future of Qantas, Geoff. At the time, we were just speculating on some of the factors recently driving the price of Qantas shares.
I can also speculate that some voters, may feel, that returning the prior Government, is more likely to result in continuation of policy status quo. Whereas the risk of unknown policies arising from a change of a governing party, may perhaps weight on a voter. Whether or not such a mindset would be warranted is anyone's guess. You are welcome to take a different viewpoint.
If you have read my previous posts, you will know that I am a big supporter of the Chairman's Lounge. It's great for business. By the way, I have recently finished reading (a heavily discounted) book, Joe Aston's "The Chairman's Lounge". There isn't much in there about the Chairman's Lounge at all - more a rehash of all his articles focused on Alan Joyce. Not a easy read, in my opinion. Perhaps one suited to those readers converted to, or believers in, his perspectives.
I take your point about Qatar. Smaller crew earnings, and there is no tax on Salaries, Wages and Allowances in Qatar. You can also add that the standard corporate income tax rate is 10% (versus 30% in Australia). Perhaps the Australian Government might insist on a type of "commercial equivalents" in pricing the wet leases - I don't know. Otherwise it is hardly a level playing field.
I have changed my Sentiment from Buy, to Hold. There are some very positive trends in the Qantas business, however, I need more clarity about what sort of airline business Qantas expects to be in 5 to 10 years time.
