How does anyone know what PetroChina and Shell are willing to pay?
Using the house context, if somebody off the street made you an unsolicited bid and you thought your house was worth more would you sell? Not likely. You'd probably tell them to go away. Maybe then they'd come back with a price you couldn't refuse, or your neighbour who'd had his wondering eye on your property might get wind of this and make a counter offer.
The difference between AOE and ESG IMO is AOE has always had intentions of going it alone, while ESG has been furiously drilling (even though they have enough gas for their projects) and bringing Chris Sadler on to the board. When the unsolicited bid comes for ESG I believe the neighbours will be ready and waiting.
