As unthinkable as it might seem, the company that started off life as South Australian Northern Territory Oil Search in the mid-1950s could soon put its Cooper Basin assets on the market, at least according to this morning’s The Australian.

The broadsheet reported rumours that Santos could put its operated stake in the vast assets around its Moomba and Wallumbilla hubs in central Australia on the market to focus elsewhere.

The Cooper Basin leases are some of the most critical oil and gas production and exploration lands in Australia.

It follows apparent confirmation that Origin Energy has withdrawn its own stake in the SA and Queensland Cooper Basin interests from sale, after it decided the assets, valued at $2.5 billion, were too important to Origin in any split of its energy and utility businesses.

Santos owns 66% of the SACBJV and SEQJV, and recently wrote down the value of the assets to $1.37 billion because of the low oil price.

Of course, even if Santos wanted to sell, it would likely trigger the intervention of the Commonwealth, with the Treasurer of the day likely to have some concerns about handing over control of a strategic national asset to overseas interests.
