Vic facing largest electricity price hike under ETS
"Victorian Government economists say the Commonwealth's proposed emissions trading scheme (ETS) will damage the state's economy.
Internal briefing documents written on behalf of the Treasurer John Lenders, in April, warn Victoria faces the biggest increases in electricity prices, under the government's proposed scheme.
They say the state's industry sector may not be "effectively compensated" under the plan, and that would make it harder to attract businesses to Victoria.
The documents estimate Victoria's average household gas and power bill would jump by about $7.00 per week, under the ETS.
Opposition MP David Davis says the Premier must stand up to his federal counterparts and demand extra compensation.
"John Brumby should not be the lapdog of the federal Labor Party," he said.
Mr Davis says the Premier has not lobbied strongly enough to protect Victorian jobs.
"He's got to do it very clearly to make sure we get an adjustment in compensation arrangements."
The Opposition wants the government to release all of its assessment of the ETS.
Victorian Energy Minister, Peter Batchelor, concedes there will be some economic pain in Victoria, as a result of the scheme.
"I think all Victorians want action taken on climate change," he said.
"They understand that to bring about new forms and cleaner forms of making electricity will bring with it a cost and that is the cost of looking after our environment," he said.
"It will increase electricity prices, but it is what we need to do to help respond to the climate change requirements." "
