    "That's surface ice, the warm water is melting the ice from the bottom up and releasing it from it's grip on the land surface, there is more ice because the fresh floats on top and freezes faster than the salty water"

    So would less surface ice mean things were getting cooler? Or do both more AND less surface ice, and probably exactly the same amount, all mean 'keep the research funds coming, I don't want to have to get a proper job'?
