    On your first point Ravi, the whole mess gets re-complicated. Erdogan's passion for years was to get rid of Assad thus a civil war that degenerated into a pseudo-religious war and the rise of ISIS (which at the time was supplied and supported by Erdogan and his son).

    You will need to do some research on the openly fascist Turkish Gray Wolf Movement which is pushing a neo-Ottoman agenda. Erdogan hitched a ride on this group to retain his Presidency though a populist / anti-Kurd agenda.

    Prior to WWI, what is now Syria was part of the Ottoman Empire ..... and it is unlikely that the Gray Wolves will ever respect a national Syrian entity. The Gray Wolf Movement will ultimately fail but the pathway to that end would be chaotic and bloody.

    Butting in from the other side is a new Persian Empire. For the moment, Turkey and Iran are more than happy to divide the region up into their respective spheres of influence.
