Consumerism has played a large part in creating too many pathways to gratification. Once the moral restraints were lifted by neo socialists in the 1970/80s the marketing focus shifted away from mass to niche, creating consumer groups which then morphed into cultural branching.
The coincidence of the WWW and tech revolution has given every man and his dog a voice and a means to find like minded fellows who reinforce preferred narratives ... how can it wrong if others agree without preaching archaic ethics and morals spoiling the party.
