Even if the "oil majors and their ilk" thought they could be fully compensated they still would not support AGW unless they believed it.
Firstly, they would not want to accept their product was damaging the climate unless there was compelling evidence - it would damage the morale of staff
Secondly, they are unlikely to be compensated for hidden costs such as people avoiding their product because of its bad image
and again it is just human nature to avoid accepting that what you have been producing for years, you whole vocation is causing damage UNLESS the evidence is too compelling to deny
