Think you will find most people don't want a nuclear power plant in their backyard either. Nor a uranium mine, tailings dump or radioactive waste storage site.
As for the relative aesthetics of these - barbed wire perimeter fences, toxic waste signage, security exclusion zones, pits of yellow tinted sludge aren't likely to become tourist attractions or be of any particular benefit to the wildlife either.
