For the next few years black coal generation will still be required for grid stabilisation , a couple of years ago shutting Liddell off would have comprised the Grid, not anymore, that is how far technology has advanced in just 2-3 years. AGL knows it has no bargaining power, they could threaten to shut Liddell and Loy Yang A and the Govt would just say "do it, it makes no difference" the 5GW both provide is easily taken up by alternate fuels and providers.
