There are two types of people in the world. Those people and businesses who want an efficient OS because they need to get work done and an ever growing group of people who just want to entertain themselves for the rest of their lives.
Apple saw the emergence of the 'entertain me' generation who plan to spend their lives touching and stroking colorful widgets on touch-screens and facebooking their lives away.
Microsoft's move to Windows 8 was a knee jerk move to service this crowd, but of course they thought all productive people would simply fall in line but productive people HATE inefficiency and that is why their take up rate is so low. I wonder how many, if any large businesses have migrated to windows 8?
Best for Microsoft if it splits development like it did when if brought out NT. They can carry on with Windows 8 touchy-feely in some form as a separate product, but their core offering and market is for people and business who need to get work done.
