I think Windows 8 required too much intelligence from the user.
It was just one step too far for the average person whom have become more comfortable with the lesser requirements of ipad and android.
Windows ME was similar in that it required hardware knowledge of the PC to make sure there were no interrupt conflicts between all cards installed.
