Recently set up my computer with a remote book (hard drive) which is where nearly all my data is now kept.
The computer is arranged with SATA removable drives so that any hard drive with any O/S which was set up on the computer will have automatic access to the book and its contents so whether I use Windows Linux or Mac on the computer there will be no conflict.
In the case of Mac I believe a copy must be set up on a hard drive (not sure).
Believe Windows is computer sensitive as are the later versions of Linux .
Certainly makes for a very efficient set up.
