Voltaire, perhaps charting is but one story in one dimension. Look, we have a company like BHP with a history that goes all the way to 1885. It had its share of glory years, as well as "gory" years. Second half of 90's was terrible, ill-timed purchase of Magma, money lost on a Vietnamese oilfield and analysts were saying that the big fella would be better off smaller. It even lost 20% of its share value in mid-1996. But now "as the world's largest resources company, BHP Billiton appeared to have struck a rich vein for the new century".
And we have China. Massive challenges over the recent years, but surprisingly the Communist regime has handled them quite skillfully year after year- though sometimes in an unacceptable way. They have managed the migration of 250 million peasants into cities, the surge in mass unemployment caused by closing down state enterprise, they have from time to time cooled the economy to stop its overheating. The largest and swiftest urbanization in history has been planned and managed well. Juxtaposing China and BHP at this present time, presents one with but one outcome for the big fella : continued explosive growth. Just want to relate to you a richer multi-dimensioned "chart" of where BHP is, where I think it is going.
