I haven't been to China, to be honest- so I do envy you. Missed my chance when my sister and her husband (US manufacturing consultant) were there for a year in Luzhou. Unfortunately they've moved to a new assignment in Italy. But gotta go one of these days and see first hand. I don't know whether you are a student of history, but remember when the Berlin Wall came down and there was a lot of US triumphalism about winning the cold war, culminating in Francis Fukuyuma's seminal book "End of History" saying that there were no more stories to say about the war on idealogy. I reckon the real "End of History" happened ten years before the collapse of the BerlinW, in 1979 when Deng said "to get rich is glorious" and a few years before "it doesn't matter whether the cat is black or white, so long as it catches mice".
