"“The ban has been imposed to allow the Ministry to streamline all export procedures that will ensure efficient and transparent processes,” “This decision has been taken after careful consideration with a view to improving the overall mining sector in Malawi.”"

    FYI

This move comes as Malawi seeks to better capitalize on its mineral resources. The country is rich in minerals such as uranium, rubies, and sapphires, but the mining sector currently contributes only 3.5% to the national income5. With proper management, it's estimated that the sector could generate up to $30 billion in exports between 2026 and 20405.

This action by Malawi aligns with a global trend of increasing export restrictions on critical raw materials. The OECD has reported a five-fold increase in such restrictions since 2009, with 10% of global trade in critical raw materials now facing at least one export restriction measure4. These restrictions can have significant impacts on global supply chains and commodity prices, particularly for materials essential to renewable energy and digital technologies. Malawi's ban is temporary and aimed at improving sector governance, it highlights the delicate balance countries must strike between protecting national interests and maintaining their position in global supply chains.
