5000 jobs proposed in LNG project

Up to 5000 construction jobs could be created in the largest coal seam gas to liquefied natural gas (LNG) project yet proposed for Australia.

The $35 billion Australia Pacific LNG (APLNG) project has been declared a “significant project” by Queensland’s Coordinator General, who will now oversee a streamlined whole of Government approval process through a rigorous Environmental Impact Statement.

“The Bligh Government will do everything in its power to encourage an LNG industry and create jobs across Queensland, from our ports to the gas fields out west,” said Infrastructure and Planning Minister Stirling Hinchliffe.

“That’s why we have cleared the way for a gas ‘super-highway’ and committed up to $30 million to buy the corridor for an underground gas pipeline from Callide to Curtis Island off Gladstone, where LNG plants are being proposed.

“The message is clear: Queensland is open for business with the LNG industry and the jobs it will bring.

“Up to 5000 construction jobs could be created in this project alone by APLNG, a company jointly owned by integrated Australian energy company Origin and the US company ConocoPhillips.

“Once it is built, up to 1000 people could have ongoing jobs to run the gas fields, processing plant and export facility.

“APLNG proposes to deliver coal seam gas by pipeline to a coastal LNG plant to be liquefied for export.

“Production could begin in 2014 at 3.5 million tonnes per annum with the potential to increase to 14 to 16 Mtpa beyond 2015.

“It would see the creation of a world-scale, long-term industry for Queensland, bringing together the resources and expertise of Origin in coal seam gas production, and ConocoPhillips in LNG production and marketing.”

APLNG has Australia’s largest and most developed CSG resource with interests in the major production fields in the Bowen and Surat Basins.

ConocoPhillips is the majority owner and operator of the Darwin LNG Facility which opened in 2006 and the leading producer of CSG in the United States.

APLNG is in ongoing discussions regarding its preferred LNG plant location, the Curtis Island Industry Precinct within the Gladstone State Development Area.

LNG is emerging as a potential major new industry in Queensland with eight projects proposed.

A specialist LNG Industry Unit has been established in the Office of the Coordinator-General, to provide a single point of entry into Government for companies investing in this new industry.
