It could be orchestrated so that say, 75% of the population is elminated.
Some ways it could be done:
* Some pandemic like we saw after WW1
(although the percentage of the population that died at that time was small)
* Tsunami, earthquakes etc
If you think it is possible for this to be "man-made"
* Nuclear war
