Before mechanised underground mining the only way was hand mining. Back then hand mining was cheap. Today mechanised mining is cheap per tonne compared to handheld mining. You cannot reliably mine with mechanised methods most narrow vein orebodies. Of the ten of thousands of old abandoned mines around the world a very small percentage ever open again - needs to be a rich province mostly eg WA Goldfields.
