ABC Online: Bush administration officials say they are still highly confident their forces will find stockpiles of chemical and biological weapons in Iraq.
Finding and eliminating Iraq's alleged weapons of mass destruction was the original rationale for the US, Britain and Australia going to war with Iraq.
At the UN today, secretary-general Kofi Annan says weapons inspectors should be allowed to return to Iraq.
"The mandate is still valid, it's only suspended because it became inoperable on account of the war," he said.
So far US-led forces have not found any chemical or biological weapons, but White House spokesman Ari Fleischer says he believes they will.
"We know Saddam Hussein is there but we haven't found him yet either. I mean the fact of the matter is we're still in a war and not everything about the war is yet known and we have confidence it will be found," he said.
Mr Fleischer categorically rejected as "the stuff of conspiracy theories", suggestions the United States might plant such weapons if its forces fail to find them.
