    My comments: If anybody takes $125k in cash to the supermarket it deserves to be stolen...

    * Woman takes $125,000 to the supermarket
    * Cash grabbed from trolley
    * Woman comes from "war-torn country"

    A VICTORIAN woman has been taken to hospital in shock after her bag containing up to $125,000 in cash was stolen while she was shopping at her local supermarket.

    The 34-year-old woman was shopping at Fishers Mildura supermarket at about 2pm (AEDT) yesterday when her handbag was stolen, possibly from her trolley, with her life savings in it, Inspector Simon Clemence said.

    He said there was $100,000 to $125,000 in the handbag, which the woman had been carrying with her "for quite some time".

    She was saving the money to buy a house.

    "She clearly made an error in judgment in not having the money in a bank, but obviously she would have had her reasons," Insp Clemence said.

    "She comes from a war-torn country where the banking system collapsed during a recent war."

    Insp Clemence said police didn't believe whoever stole the handbag knew that amount of money was inside.

    "We think it was just an opportunistic theft and unfortunately the thieves have hit the jackpot."

    The woman was distraught and had to be treated in hospital for shock after the theft.

    "While police were questioning her she quite literally collapsed and had to be taken to hospital. She's effectively lost her life savings and she's totally devastated," Insp Clemence said.

    Police are viewing security footage from inside the supermarket and from the car park.

    The stolen handbag is made from a black woven material, police believe.

    They are also searching for a white 1995 dual cab Toyota Hilux seen in the car park about the time of the theft.

    "We're calling for people in Mildura and the surrounding areas to be mindful if they know of anyone who claims to have come into a large amount of money, or of anyone who makes sudden large purchases," Insp Clemence said.
