Try this thought experiment. If women worked for 20% less than men for doing the same job, which seems to be the general claim, why are employers not lining up to employ women at the literal expense of men. If, as an employer, I can save 20% of my labour costs then all of my chauvanistic prejudices would come second to my greed. Men would have to lower their wage levels in order to compete with women.

Women earn less, agreed. It's not because they are lazy or unproductive or dumber or whatever. It is because of a range of factors including children, career choices and general reasonableness. Reasonable men get paid less than unreasonable men. But reasonableness does not fully explain it - see my thought experiment above.

It is amazing how the people pushing this "women are underpaid" garbage have not the slightest idea how markets work. Companies run for profit don't pay 20% more for their major cost component when they have a choice.

On a tangential topic I tried hiring older workers preferential in an industry where there is a great deal of age discrimination. I thought I could be clever and get super high quality employees by hiring the older people other companies were rejecting out of hand. What I found is there is a very good reason for the age discrimination - the older staff were far less productive and far, far more problematic. It turns out the real bargain were the young.
