Fresh anti-Lynas campaign with polls focus
    Malaysiakini – 12 hours ago

From its 300km march last month to 100 days of an intensified anti-Lynas campaign, Himpunan Hijau is stepping up its momentum at a crucial time with an eye on the forthcoming general election.

Its intention is to stop BN from winning Putrajaya again, as the federal government has been instrumental in approving the controversial rare earths refinery project in Gebeng, Kuantan.

The group will launch the campaign on Dec 25, with a celebration of the first-month anniversary of the 'Green March' from Kuantan to Kuala Lumpur.

Himpunan Hijau members, who will be at Dataran Merdeka in Kuala Lumpur, have invited members of the public to join them for sandwiches.

On Dec 28, a 100-hour hunger strike will be mounted by youths from the 'Kill the Bill' group.

In the morning of Dec 31, the campaigners will move in a convoy from Kuala Lumpur to Kuantan, retracing the route of the Green March in reverse, with activities to be held in various towns along the way.

The campaign will wind up with a mega ceramah in Kuantan on New Year's Eve.

Himpunan Hijau chairperson Wong Tack ( right ) told a DAP ceramah in Bentong last night that the next 100 days would be the most crucial time for moves to halt the operations of the rare earths refinery, because a general election will have to be called by next June.

Contacted this morning, Wong said his group would not only form a human wall to disrupt the operations, but would also strive to stop the BN from being returned to power.

"We have seen clearly their policy. Lynas is the symbol of a corrupt system. If we do not address the root cause, the fight will never end... so, we must settle it once and for all, by uprooting the evil forces," he said.

    'Ear-cutting ceremony'

Wong also said the campaigners would make a stop at Bentong on Dec 31 to hold an 'ear-cutting ceremony'.

This was a reference to Pahang Menteri Besar Adnan Yaakob's ( left ) remark that he would cut his ears off and jump into the Pahang River should DAP win the Bentong parliamentary constituency, in which his Pelangai state seat is located.

"But we are not as frightening as the menteri besar. We just organise peaceful activities. We may have a series of creative activities to present our voice," Wong said of the planned spoof.

"We hope to have some food related to ears in a restaurant, such as cow ears and other interesting stuff."

Adnan has since clarified that his remark was only "a figure of speech".

Wong invited members of the public to join the convoy and be part of the "car blockade" movement in Kuantan to paralyse traffic by making the city the "biggest car park in the world".

"If you (Kuantan residents) don't want to join us, then don't leave your house or you will blame us (for inconveniencing you on the day). We also want to paralyse all the roads in the east coast."

The mega ceramah at Pantai Balok, Kuantan, is scheduled to be held through the night up to dawn.

"I hope everyone can come to Pantai Balok at 11.55pm, park your car everywhere and welcome the New Year, new hope and new regime. Let's make 2012 the year that ends a corrupted regime!" he added.

In a related development, DAP parliamentary leader Lim Kit Siang ( right ) announced at last night's ceramah that the party would form an 'ear-cutting committee' to help Pakatan Rakyat capture Bentong and Pahang in the next general polls.

Lim even recommended that Rasah MP Anthony Loke, who has just stepped down from the post of DAP Youth chief, leads the committee, and that Pahang DAP chief Leong Ngah Ngah takes on Bentong MP Liow Tiong Lai in the 13th general election.

Loke, who also spoke during the ceramah, also openly invited Wong to contest the coming election on a DAP ticket.
