Coalition, PM dominate latest Newspoll

Support for the coalition has held steady at the levels of the October election and Prime Minister John Howard continues to dominate the Leader of the Opposition, the latest Newspoll shows.

The coalition's primary vote stood at 46 per cent against 46.7 per cent at the election, while Labor remained at 38 per cent, against 37.6 per cent on the eve of the election.

On a two-party preferred basis, the coalition held its ground at 52 per cent last weekend (52.8 per cent at the election) and the ALP at 48 per cent (47.2 per cent), according to the Newspoll taken at the weekend and published in The Australian.

More voters were satisfied with Mr Howard's performance as prime minister (51 per cent) than they were with Kim Beazley in his role as Opposition Leader (47 per cent).

Asked who would make a better prime minister, 52 per cent chose Mr Howard over Mr Beazley (31 per cent). This rating has held steady over the past three fortnightly surveys.
