When I bought my Lopi wood heater I got a free electronic gadget that measures the moisture content of the wood. I've found it very useful and it's surprising just how fast some wood dries out.
One thing not to try is to push the probes into the back of your hand and press the button to measure your own moisture content. It's not a good feeling!
