They are quite common with demergers and the like. They give shareholders who end up with small inconvenient parcels a way to cash out without brokerage which might be prohibitive fif selling a handful of shares. Advantage to company is that the share register is not cluttered with a lot of very small shareholders who still incur servicing costs by registry.
