Yes, for pure long speculation thats doable. Personally Id be going into Sep 23 contracts at this point, if I were to do it. I am focusing on CBA options at moment though, and am interested in Woodside for shares as at least a medium term investment, anticipating bumper gas prices and fat dividends.

Youve laid it out quite nicely. However, my experience of these situations is that rationality often goes out the window. It may well occur, but with so much buy pressure that the price goes up even as those holders exit. Who knows? They may just want to sell off and buy more BHP shares, as the dividends are both gonna come through at similar times, and BHP dividend is expected to also be large.
