I think we're on the same page, but even with current supply we're a net exporter of gas. The government policy doesn't help but it's ultimately their inaction over decades that has been us in this position. It has little to nothing to do with renewables (was my original point). I know the original comment wasn't yours, but It seems like some posters here believe the nonsense they hear on the likes of Sky news.
The government likes to distract people from the fact they are are terrible at their job and only care about themselves. They want us to blame others (blame high energy on renewables, not our poor energy policy and privatisation of transmission), let's blame migrants for high property prices (not the incentives they put in for property speculation, or their inaction to ensure adequate housing is being built)
