The 2007 federal election indeed marked a pivotal moment in Australia's energy policy. Both the Australian Labor Party (ALP) and the Liberal-National Coalition (LNP) had overlapping commitments to addressing climate change, with John Howard's government proposing a carbon trading scheme and Kevin Rudd's ALP advocating for similar measures. However, the trajectory shifted significantly after Tony Abbott became Prime Minister. Abbott's policies leaned heavily against renewable energy, favoring coal and opposing carbon pricing. Mr Abbott was a key minister in the Howard govt and backed the carbon trading system.
If Howard had won the Carbon Trading System would be in place and energy prices would be so much lower today.
