The Australian Energy Market Operator has warned states could soon face gas shortages. AEMO says the gas… shortfalls could begin as early as 2025. Market-wide deficiencies are also expected to grow from 2026. A lack of supply on the east coast could force gas generators to burn diesel to keep the power grid running. The energy watchdog says more developments, including LNG import plants and pipeline upgrades, are needed to address gas supply shortfalls.

Chief Executive Officer at Victorian Chamber of Commerce Paul Guerra says gas is a “pivotal” part of the Victorian… economy and alludes to “rumours” of natural gas reserves being gone by 2027 or 2028. “Gas is such a pivotal part of the Victorian economy now that if there was not gas there, we would start to lose businesses,” he said. “In fact, 65 per cent of the businesses that responded to the survey name energy policy as the biggest issue they see going forward. “That is ahead of workforce and taxation. “Which is a big call for Victoria.”
