Formguide, I think chooks have always been 'halal'. Throats cut. Found the following:

"I work very close to the food industry.

The chickens are hung upside down in hook type conveyors. Electricity is passed through their body, after which they hang limp. Then a blade takes off their head.

"Halal" chickens are made 'Halal' by a guy who stands beside the conveyor and touches ('blesses') every single one. That's production line halal for you. That's the only difference between halal chickens & non halal chickens." (ColdRain)
