This is the sort of thing that the US has been working on,

    http://www.dtic.mil/ndia/2007armaments/Fair.pdf

But do people remember when Obama said about future weapons that would be nice to have, those that did 100% of what was required but were prohibitively expensive compared to weapons that did similar 80%of the time at a minuscule amount of the cost.

Compare the link above to what the Mach 5/50 technology can do with just a barrel and a round, yeah sure the hypervelocity rod can reach higher velocities and therefore fire over longer distances but at what cost, the mach 5/50 tech is four times better than anything out there now and is also much lighter an more accurate compared to other weapons systems with the same destructive capability, they will cost bugger all compared to say the weapon shown on page 26 of the above link and it will be far more readily transportable on a much lighter and more maneuverable vehicle than that shown in the PDF.

The mach 5/50 weapon is the sort of weapon the Chinese would be interested in no bones about that and it has been fired at the Woomera test range on a repeatable basis, it is a 60mm round with a velocity better than 1600 metres per second (thats is bl**dy fast compared to what is available now) these rounds travel in a flat line basically and the time to target is decreased dramatically compared to todays stuff and with a whopping KE of at least four times that of a similar calibre round fired from todays weapons!

The US doesn't want it? I say Bulldust.
