If you don't know what mud and casings are you should do a lot more research on oil & gas drilling.
As for the amount needed it depends on the results of drilling. If there is over pressure then more mud is needed and so on.
A ton of variables can be thrown at drillers during the drilling process and adjustments are made accordingly.
