The Federal LNP says they have studied Canada. Maybe not in too much detail though! Canada's last nuclear power plant was approved in 1977 and was delivered 5 years late (15 year build time) and at 400% of the original approved capital cost

The last nuclear power plant commissioned in Canada was Darlington, Ontario. After 5 years of evaluation starting 1973 it was approved in 1977, it was finally commissioned in 1993 - a construction time of 15 years in total, 5 years late (20 years in total). And that in a country that back 50 years ago knew how to build hashtag#nuclear, unlike Australia (then, or now). And then let's look at the capital cost blow outs (ignoring financing costs for 15 years). Capital costs were originally approved at C$3.9bn, but blew-out to C$13.8bn (according to a Canadian government report back then, or C$14.4bn when a C$600m refurbishment immediately on commissioning is added in. A 400% capital cost blowout!

O'Brien also forgets to tell us that because of the debt burden inflicted by this capex blow-out the state-owned utility Ontario Hydro went into financial distress on the back of this capital cost blowout and ceased trading in 1999. The generation assets were transferred to Ontario Power Generation where they sit today (a bit like the equity re capitalisation Snowy Hydro Limitedrequired this year due to the Snowy 2.0 LNP debacle).

How important is nuclear to Canada? 14% of total generation in 2023 (down from 16% a decade ago). Against that, renewable energy is 65% of Canada's total generation, up from 62% a decade ago

Repayment of the more than 10 trillion yen ($68 billion) government funding for cleanup and compensation for the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant disaster has been delayed, the Japanese government says.
The Board of Audit said in a report released Monday that the delay stems from technical difficulties and Tokyo Electric Power Co. Holdings’ worsening financial state. It said the entire process may take more than 40 years.
The nuclear plant suffered triple meltdowns following the 2011 earthquake and tsunami, spewing radiation that contaminated areas nearby and forcing tens of thousands of people to evacuate.
Funding for the first 11 years of the disaster has already amounted to nearly half of TEPCO’s total estimate of a cost of 22 trillion yen ($150 billion) for the decades-long project.
